Our newest stockist is The Fishman in Wicklow Town. You may have heard of him and his famous customer; Sammy the Seal? Well its amazing people are coming from all over to meet Sammy he has been on TV and is a major attraction. He floats about outside the fish shop and if you kick the ladder that leads into the water he pops up just like that! Its amazing really and the kids and adults love him. The fish shop is super also and its great that by buying you are supporting the local fishermen. The quality is superb and you get all the tips on the best way to cook the fish, I just wish it was closer to us!

We also ran a customer survey on our facebook page to try and get to know our customers a little better and it was interesting that the majority of the people who answered buy spelt because because its spelt and not because of a food intolerance. Over the next few months we will be taking on board the suggestions made so watch this space. Of course we had a little draw for the lovely ladies who entered the competition, watch the video here to see who won…

Another interesting thing we found was that you want brownies! So here is a brownie recipe using our White Spelt Scone Mix. These brownies would be great if you are having people over for lunch, a communion, children’s party etc and they are quiet easy to make.

September News!

Hello again, its been a while! Hope you are having a lovely summer! We are back form our tastings in London in Planet Organic and Wholefoods Market Kensington for a few weeks now. London is such a fast fast city and it took a few days to get used to all the human traffic. We were of course there in the middle of a heat wave so the bread wasnt the only thing baking I can tell  you ;).

We met the loveliest people there including a couple from Canada from the University of Quebec who were over on a conference and sent us this lovely pic of our scones!

Here’s another one from a customer who made our spelt bread with her daughter. The mixes are so easy to make and it a great way of getting kids into baking. As all the ingredients are in the bag you dont have to worry about measuring. Plus they are so quick as the mixes are all yeast free. The lovely online shop Natures Healthbox sent us these images.

Cathys Spelt for Health Tasting in London

We are in London at the moment and have a busy schedule for the next two weeks with tastings in Planet Organic this week and Wholefoods next week.  It was a bit hectic before we left as ‘Granny’ was in the Sunday Business Post   ahead of the over 50’s National 2 day conference in Athlone, Galway where  those over 50 are encouraged to use their talents and set up new businesses. Cathy was 58 and so its never too late and its given her a completely new lease of life, she would encourage anyone who had an idea to talk it through with perhaps your local enterprise board and make an informed decision.

Just as we were getting ready to pack the bags the mobile rang and it was RTE on the way to cover her story ahead of the conference and it was broadcast on the six o clock news that evening. The phone was buzzing and thanks so much to everyone for all the good wishes they are so much appreciated and were it not for the customers support we would not be here.

Last week Cathy was featured on RTE’s Morning Ireland as they were doing a feature on entrepreneurs who are over 50 and started a business. Cathy’s business started up by accident really and with the help of the Wicklow Enterprise Board the brand was born.

Natural and Organic Expo 2013

Fiona on Cathys Spelt for Health Stand

Cathy and Yvonne Cathys SpeltWe made it back from London after attending the Natural Products Europe Expo on 7th and 8th April in the Olympia. My voice didnt however and Im a bit hoarse still but the lovely Sarah from Bee Prepared saved the day with her  magic little potion containing bee propolis which gave my immunity that extra boost it needed. Its a truly amazing show with over 8 thousand attendees from all corners of the globe.  These shows really attract the nicest people and you can just feel the positivity in the air. We met lots of people from last year who popped by to say hello. As its a trade only show there is no selling so there is no pressure on anyone to buy which means they come up and chat freely.

Wholeleaf companyAll the big brands were there and my main regret is that we just didnt have time to look around the 500 or so stands! We were beside the The Wholeleaf Co. which started by three friends George, Peter and Adejare.  George went to visit family in India and came back with some bowls made from palm leaves. He showed them to his brother Peter and their friend Adejare and they came up with the ingenious idea to bring these bowls which are made from palm tree leaves to the UK. In doing so they are supporting the people in India who make them and are biodegradable. We used these for our bread samples during the show and they are brilliant and look so much better than white paper plates.

Natural Products Show

After all that we are thrilled that the lovely people in both Planet Organic and Wholefoods Kensington will take us on board. Keep an eye out for us in May and June. Our next mission is to make sure its a success, its a tough market but we’ll do our best.

Easter Bunny

Close up of decorated Easter Eggs

So its been a while, in the past few weeks Cathy became the proud granny to two little beauties Emily and Eamon.  These are her first grandchildren so you can imagine the excitement! She also adopted another dog,  all my sister had to do was show her a photo of the poor dog who needed a home and job done. Lola is her name, a basset hound who even has a few tricks up her sleeves when bribed with a treat, spelt treats of course ;).  Lola has settled in well with Millie and Charlie both of whom also needed a good home and they certainly have found one.

Cathys Spelt for Health Bunny Cake

Easter also happened as it does and we had the Easter Bunny Cake! This is the most amazing cake, we used to have variations of this cake for our birthdays when we were kids. Its really delicious made with half a bag of our white scone mix and lemon flavored butter icing with coconut added for special effect!  This would be great for a birthday cake and is quiet easy to make, we will put the recipe up soon(ish)! Your kids will love you and have very fond memories I can assure you, its so much nicer and much more fun to bake a cake.

Our new packaging also arrived just in time for the Natural and Organic Products Europe Show in the Olympia on 7th and 8th April. This is our second year there and we had a great time last year so cant wait, its a super show.  If you are going come and visit us on stand 9091 you’ll get lots to nibble on!
